Join me as I explore the wild beauty of Exmoor National Park by bike — climbing through ancient woodlands, peaceful villages, and rugged moorland, all the way to the highest point in Somerset, the windswept summit of Dunkery Beacon (519m). This ride starts from Bossington Hall, heads through the charming village of Porlock, climbs steeply through Hawkcombe Woods and Horner Woods, pushes up to the open Exmoor moors, and finally reaches Dunkery Beacon — before a rocky descent through Brockwell, Luccombe, Allerford, and back to where it began. It was steep, rocky, and definitely a challenge — but the views, wildlife, and peaceful atmosphere of Exmoor made it one of my most rewarding rides so far. 🚴‍♂️ Cycling the Quantock Hills | Wild Ponies, Forest Trails & Epic Views | MTB Adventure in Somerset, UK 🇬🇧 In this vlog, I head out for an unforgettable bike ride through one of England’s best-kept secrets — the Quantock Hills, located in Somerset, South West England. The Quantocks are a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and it’s easy to see why. With their heather-covered moorland, ancient oak forests, steep valleys, and wide-open grassy hilltops, this landscape feels like something straight out of a storybook. It’s the perfect place to explore by bike — especially if you love gravel riding, mountain biking, or just getting off the beaten path. ⸻ 🏡 Starting in Nether Stowey – A Quintessential English Village I started my ride in Nether Stowey, a charming little village on the edge of the hills. With its traditional pubs, cosy tearooms, and friendly community vibe, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and take it all in. It’s also famous for being home to the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge — his old cottage is now a National Trust site called Coleridge Cottage. From here, I pedalled through a network of tiny country lanes and quiet villages, working my way toward the base of the Quantocks. That’s where the real adventure began… ⸻ 🌲 Entering the Great Wood – Into the Forest We Go Shortly after the village of Over Stowey, I entered The Great Wood, following a peaceful trail along the Cockercombe River through a beautiful area known as Cockercombe Bottom. The trail got steep fast, and I had to take a banana break (as you do 😅). A few gates and climbs later, I was out of the woods and up onto the open moorland, where the views were nothing short of stunning. ⸻ 🐴 Riding With Wild Ponies on the Moor This was the part I was most excited about — and it didn’t disappoint. The Quantock Hills are home to semi-wild Exmoor-type ponies, who roam freely across the hilltops. They’re technically owned by local farmers or “commoners,” but they’re totally wild in spirit. I found myself cycling right through a herd of them, and they didn’t seem to mind one bit! I also saw sheep hiding in the bracken, and cows chilling on the trails. It felt like I was riding through a giant, open-air nature reserve. ⸻ 🛤️ The Famous Drove Road – Ancient Trails With Big Views I followed the Drove Road, one of the most famous trails in the Quantocks. It’s an ancient route that was used to move livestock from village to village and down to market. These days, it’s a bridleway, which means it’s open to walkers, cyclists, and horse riders — and it offers some of the best views in the entire area. Even though the weather was a bit cloudy and breezy, the dramatic skies added to the atmosphere. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Bristol Channel and even over to South Wales. ⸻ 🐄 Cow Standoff, Sheep Patrol & a Pub Lunch One unexpected moment? A standoff with a large brown cow blocking the path. Let’s just say… he wasn’t in a hurry to move 😅 A curious group of sheep also wandered over to inspect my electric gears — clearly, they’re fans of good tech. After a morning of climbing, I descended into the village of Crowcombe, where I stopped at the Carew Arms pub for some much-needed fish and chips. Highly recommend if you’re ever in the area! ⸻ 🗺️ The Way Back – More Climbing, More Views After lunch, it was time to head back to Nether Stowey. The only catch? I had to climb back over the Quantock Hills! I passed Crowcombe Court, a beautiful historic house, and began the long climb up through Triscombe. The Quantocks aren’t the biggest hills in the UK, but they’re steep and not to be underestimated — especially with a belly full of chips. Finally, I descended back down through The Great Wood, navigating some tricky, rooty sections on the way down. It was challenging but super fun, and the forest was absolutely magical in the late-afternoon light. ⸻ 🎥 Vlog Highlights • 🏞️ Stunning moorland & sea views • 🐴 Wild pony encounters • 🐑 Sheep & cows casually chilling on the trails • 🌲 Epic forest riding through The Great Wood • ⛰️ Climbing to Will’s Neck – the highest point of the Quantocks • 🍽️ Classic British pub lunch in Crowcombe • 🚴‍♂️ Ancient trails with loads of character and history • 🧭 Full circular route: village → forest → hills → pub → back again! ⸻ ✅ Final Thoughts This ride was definitely one of my favourite UK cycling experiences so far. The variety of terrain, the natural wildlife, the historic trails, and the peaceful village atmosphere all combined to make it a really special day on the bike. Whether you’re into mountain biking, gravel grinding, or just love exploring hidden gems in the UK, the Quantock Hills should 100% be on your list.

Join me on an unforgettable ride through southern Morocco as I cycle from the small village of Tamedakhte to the world-famous Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic fortified villages in North Africa. This journey takes us through a landscape full of history, culture, and breathtaking desert scenery. I start my ride early in the morning to beat the intense Moroccan summer heat. From Tamedakhte, I pass by the ruins of its once-grand kasbah with eight defensive towers before heading along the Asif Ounila River. The route follows winding roads and passes through small villages such as Assfalou, where old mudbrick houses stand alongside newer concrete buildings. This contrast is everywhere in Morocco—between traditional architecture and the modern changes creeping in. The highlight of this ride is, of course, Aït Benhaddou. On one side of the river lies the newer town, but across the stepping stones sits the spectacular mudbrick ksar, perched dramatically on a hillside. With its tightly packed houses, defensive walls, corner towers, and narrow alleys, it is one of the best-preserved examples of Moroccan earthen clay architecture. No wonder UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. For centuries, families lived inside its walls for protection from raids and the harsh desert climate. Today only a few remain, but the ksar still stands as a living reminder of Morocco’s cultural heritage. Walking through its streets is like stepping back in time. Many buildings are decorated with traditional patterns molded into the clay, and the entire setting looks straight out of a movie—because it literally is. 🎬 Movies & TV filmed at Aït Benhaddou include: • Gladiator • The Mummy • Kingdom of Heaven • Prince of Persia • Game of Thrones After crossing back over the river, I climb to a viewpoint overlooking the ksar, with sweeping views of the river and the desert beyond. But the adventure doesn’t stop there. From Aït Benhaddou, I continue west into the open desert, where rocky plains and ochre-red cliffs make for thrilling cycling. The route takes me through the village of Tadoula, with its crumbling buildings, wide valley views, and striking sandstone cliffs tinted red by iron oxide. From there, I continue off-road toward Tadoula Nait Twaya, where the story of Morocco’s mudbrick architecture continues. Many villages in this region are abandoning mudbrick for concrete because concrete requires less maintenance. But something is lost in the process—the cool natural insulation, the beauty of the earthen walls, and the centuries-old craftsmanship. Mudbrick houses need constant care: cracks must be filled with mud, walls replastered, and flat roofs reinforced with new waterproofing layers. Without this attention, they slowly fall into ruin. Cycling through these villages, I see this contrast everywhere—heritage fading against the demands of modern life. The final part of my ride loops back toward Aït Benhaddou, across dry desert tracks dotted with thorny bushes and scattered stones. It’s the perfect mix of history, landscape, and cycling adventure. By finishing early, I avoid the worst of the heat and enjoy the quiet beauty of the Moroccan countryside before most tourists arrive. ✨ This ride had it all: • Ancient kasbahs and fortified villages • UNESCO World Heritage history • Stunning desert landscapes and geology • Insights into traditional mudbrick architecture • Famous film and TV locations • Exciting off-road cycling trails With more time, there is so much more to discover in this area—the Ounila Valley, the desert routes toward Telouet, and countless other kasbahs hidden in the hills. Join me for a cycling adventure deep in the heart of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, southwest England. This 25 km loop ride takes me from the high moorland town of Princetown down to Burrator Reservoir, passing granite tors, wild ponies, old tin mines, and a stretch of the historic Princetown Railway trail. Dartmoor is one of the UK’s most iconic wild landscapes – a rugged highland of granite outcrops, open moorland, sweeping valleys, and deep history. It’s famous for its dramatic tors, roaming Dartmoor ponies, and unpredictable weather. If you love cycling, nature, and adventure, this loop combines them all. 🚴 The Route I start the ride in Princetown, the highest town on Dartmoor (and one of the highest in England), known for its remote location and the historic Dartmoor Prison. From here, I head out on Ivybridge Lane, a rough moorland track dotted with grazing cows and the first of many gates. Not far in, I meet some of Dartmoor’s most famous residents – the wild Dartmoor ponies, including a curious foal who seemed just as interested in me as I was in it. The first landmark is South Hessery Tor, a modest granite outcrop with wide views across the moor. Tors are Dartmoor’s signature feature – free-standing granite rock outcrops shaped over millions of years of erosion and weathering. From here I enjoy my first proper descent, jumping my bike around and swooping down the hillside. Next up is Nun’s Cross, a historic stone cross dating back to at least the 13th century, once used by monks and travellers as a waymarker when crossing this often unforgiving landscape. 🐴 Wildlife & History The trail is never dull – I ride past herds of cows, meet more ponies, and cross a few little streams (trying not to splash my white cycling outfit too much!). The route also passes Eylesbarrow Mine, once one of Dartmoor’s busiest tin mines in the 1800s. The ruins still remain today, scattered with granite foundations, while sheep now graze over what was once a hive of industry. From the mine, I enjoy a wicked descent down towards Gutter Tor and then head toward Sheepstor, a steep-sided hill that rises to about 369 m. Sheepstor is one of Dartmoor’s most dramatic tors and was even used as a filming location for Spielberg’s War Horse. Climbing up through long grass and past lazy cows, I reach the summit to take in stunning views down to the Burrator Reservoir. 💧 Burrator Reservoir & Return The descent from Sheepstor is steep (steep enough that I admit to walking parts of it!), before reaching the southern edge of Burrator Reservoir. Built in the late 19th century to supply water to Plymouth, this vast reservoir is framed by woodland and granite hills. I ride across the impressive Burrator Dam, a beautiful curved stone structure completed in 1898. From here, I climb up to join the old Princetown Railway line, a disused track that once linked the moor to the outside world. Opened in 1883 and closed in 1956, the line transported granite, supplies, and passengers. Today, it’s a scenic walking and cycling route, mostly flat and easy to ride – although it does include about 20 gates to open and close! Riding this trail back to Princetown is the perfect way to finish the loop, with big views across the moor and another tor, Ingra Tor, along the way. 🌄 Why This Ride Was Special This loop has a little bit of everything – history, wildlife, climbs, fun descents, and incredible scenery. I got to ride past granite tors, explore old mine ruins, meet Dartmoor ponies, and enjoy both rocky technical trails and smooth railway gravel. The mix of landscapes and landmarks makes this one of my favourite rides on Dartmoor so far. If you’re planning a cycling trip to Dartmoor, I’d highly recommend this loop from Princetown to Burrator Reservoir.
